Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) expanded its approach to character development through the Grand Launching of Thursina Golf at the mini golf course on the Thursina IIBS Male Campus on August 18, 2026.
The launch marked the development of golf as a medium for learning character, leadership, and social skills beyond the classroom.
The event was attended by Chairman of Thursina IIBS, Ustaz Dr. H. Muhammad Ali Wahyudi; CEO of Thursina IIBS, Ustaz Nur Abidin, Ed.D.; senior advisors; directors; management; and students.
Thursina does not position golf merely as a recreational activity. The nature of the game, which requires concentration, precision, patience, and self-control, is considered highly relevant to the process of developing students’ character and mental strength.
CEO of Thursina IIBS, Ustaz Nur Abidin, Ed.D., explained that golf has a strong educational dimension because players are expected to maintain integrity even when no one else is watching.
“Golf teaches students to dream big, but at the same time to remain trustworthy, uphold fairness, and manage their emotions. A player must even be able to become their own referee, honestly admit mistakes, and accept the result of the game with maturity,” said Ustaz Abidin.
According to the Master of Education graduate from Flinders University of South Australia, future success should not be measured only by personal achievement. Students also need to understand that the position, network, and success they gain should eventually create benefits for others.
Beyond personal character development, golf also gives students opportunities to strengthen communication and relationship-building skills. Because the game involves extended interaction, the course becomes a space for learning etiquette, dialogue, and social networking.
Leader of Thursina Golf Club, Ahmad Reza, sees the new facility as the beginning of a new golf culture among Thursina students.
“We want Thursina Golf Club to become a place where students learn that every shot requires focus, strategy, and calmness. They will also learn discipline, sportsmanship, and how to carry themselves when interacting with others,” Reza said.
The Thursina mini golf course was built on an area of approximately 1,200 square metres and features two greens, three bunkers, two absorption ponds, and three tee boxes as starting points for play. The course uses Matrella grass, known for its dense texture and relatively smooth surface, creating a more comfortable playing experience while giving the course a neat and well-maintained appearance for student training.
The development of Thursina Golf also reflects the Open-Minded value within Thursina IIBS’s RECODING Values by creating learning experiences through different spaces and approaches. Golf is introduced not as a symbol of exclusivity, but as a medium for broadening students’ horizons and developing character and skills that are relevant in a global environment.
Through Thursina Golf, the school hopes to build a new tradition that brings together sport, character, and aspiration. With every shot, students are reminded that big dreams require focus, integrity, calmness, and the courage to keep moving forward. (Izz)
